About Atherton

A guide to the city, its neighborhoods, and its homes.

Atherton is a residential town between Redwood City and Menlo Park. Zoning limits almost the entire town to single-family homes, and most lots are one acre or more.

The town has no downtown shopping district. Shops and restaurants are a short drive away in Menlo Park, Redwood City, and Palo Alto.

Getting around

El Camino Real runs through the east side of town, and I-280 is a few minutes west. US-101 is a short drive east.

Atherton's Caltrain station is closed. The nearest stations are Menlo Park and Redwood City.

Neighborhoods

West Atherton
Large lots west of Alameda de las Pulgas, close to I-280.
Central Atherton
Estates between El Camino Real and Alameda de las Pulgas, near the town center and Holbrook-Palmer Park.
Lindenwood
A historic subdivision in the northeast part of town with tree-lined streets and one-acre lots.

Homes

Most homes are large custom houses or new construction. Many buyers purchase older homes to remodel or rebuild.

Because so few homes sell each month, the monthly median price can swing widely. Look at the rolling numbers and the sale count together.

Schools

Public elementary schools serving Atherton depend on the address. Parts of town fall in the Las Lomitas, Menlo Park City, and Redwood City school districts. High school students attend the Sequoia Union High School District, and Menlo-Atherton High School sits in town. Several private schools, including Menlo School and Sacred Heart, have campuses in Atherton.

School boundaries change. Confirm the assigned schools for any address with the district before you buy.

Parks, shops, and things to do

Holbrook-Palmer Park has gardens, tennis courts, and event space. The town center rebuilt its civic buildings and library in recent years.

Stanford, Sand Hill Road, and downtown Menlo Park are about 5 to 10 minutes away.

What to check before you buy

  • Check the elementary school district by address, since it changes across town.
  • New construction and major remodels go through town planning and building review. Ask for permit history on any recent work.
  • Some areas near San Francisquito Creek and the east side may fall in FEMA flood zones. Check by address.
