A guide to the city, its neighborhoods, and its homes.
Los Altos sits between Palo Alto, Mountain View, and Cupertino. Most of the city is single-family homes on larger lots than nearby cities, often 10,000 square feet or more.
Downtown Los Altos is a small, walkable triangle of shops and restaurants along Main Street and State Street.
I-280 runs along the southwest side, and Foothill Expressway, El Camino Real, and San Antonio Road cross the city. US-101 is about 10 minutes north.
Los Altos has no Caltrain station. The nearest stations are San Antonio and Mountain View.
Many original 1950s ranch homes have been replaced with new two-story houses. Older homes on large lots often sell as rebuild opportunities.
Condos and townhomes are a small share of sales and cluster near downtown and El Camino Real.
Most of Los Altos is in the Los Altos School District for kindergarten through 8th grade and the Mountain View-Los Altos Union High School District for 9th through 12th grade. A few areas fall in other districts, so check by address.
School boundaries change. Confirm the assigned schools for any address with the district before you buy.
Redwood Grove Nature Preserve and Shoup Park sit along Adobe Creek near downtown. Rancho San Antonio Preserve is a few minutes south.
Downtown hosts a weekly farmers market in season and seasonal events on Main Street.
