About Woodside

A guide to the city, its neighborhoods, and its homes.

Woodside is a rural town in the hills west of Redwood City. Large lots, horse properties, and redwood and oak forest define it. The town has almost no commercial development beyond a small town center on Woodside Road.

Homes range from rustic cabins to large estates. Most properties sit on one acre or more.

Getting around

I-280 runs along the east side of town. Woodside Road (SR-84) connects to Redwood City and US-101 to the east and to Skyline Boulevard (SR-35) and the coast to the west.

The nearest Caltrain station is Redwood City, about 10 to 15 minutes away by car.

Neighborhoods

Town Center
The small commercial area at Woodside Road and Canada Road, with a market, restaurants, and the historic Woodside Store nearby.
Emerald Hills and Woodside Hills
Hillside neighborhoods on the Redwood City side. Some addresses carry a Woodside or Redwood City mailing address but sit outside the town limits.
Skyline and the western hills
Forested parcels along Kings Mountain Road and Skyline Boulevard, often with wells and septic systems.
Central Woodside
Open, rolling land with horse properties and estates along Mountain Home Road and Portola Road.

Homes

Zoning requires large minimum lot sizes in most of town, often one acre or more. That keeps density low and limits new subdivisions.

Many properties include barns, arenas, guest houses, or vineyards. Expect a wide price range, since land, views, and improvements vary so much.

Schools

Most of Woodside is in the Woodside Elementary School District, a single kindergarten through 8th grade school. Some parts of town fall in the Las Lomitas or Portola Valley elementary districts. High school students attend the Sequoia Union High School District, which includes Woodside High School in Redwood City.

School boundaries change. Confirm the assigned schools for any address with the district before you buy.

Parks, shops, and things to do

Huddart County Park and Wunderlich County Park have miles of trails through redwood forest. The town has an extensive horse trail network.

Filoli, a historic estate and garden, sits at the north end of town. Skyline Boulevard and Kings Mountain Road are popular cycling routes.

What to check before you buy

  • The San Andreas Fault runs through Woodside. Check whether a property sits in an Alquist-Priolo earthquake fault zone.
  • Much of Woodside is in mapped very high wildfire hazard zones. Get insurance quotes before you remove contingencies, and check defensible space requirements.
  • Many homes use septic systems and some use wells. Inspect both, and check permits for any unpermitted structures.
  • The town has strict design review and planning rules. Talk to the planning department before you count on building or remodeling plans.
