About Monte Sereno

A guide to the city, its neighborhoods, and its homes.

Monte Sereno is a small, almost fully residential city between Los Gatos and Saratoga, at the base of the Santa Cruz Mountains. Homes use a Los Gatos mailing address.

Most homes are single-family houses on larger lots, from ranch homes on the flats to custom homes in the hills.

Getting around

Saratoga-Los Gatos Road (SR-9) runs through the city. SR-17 is a few minutes east, and SR-85 runs along the north side.

Monte Sereno has no rail station. The nearest light rail stops are in Campbell, and Caltrain is in San Jose.

Neighborhoods

The flats
Ranch and custom homes on level lots near Saratoga-Los Gatos Road.
The hills
Custom homes on hillside lots in the south, many with valley views.
Near downtown Los Gatos
Homes on the east side, a short drive or bike ride from North Santa Cruz Avenue.

Homes

Single-family homes make up nearly all sales. There are few condos or townhomes.

Monte Sereno has few sales each year, so prices can swing from quarter to quarter. Look at several quarters before drawing conclusions.

Schools

Most of the city is in the Los Gatos Union School District for kindergarten through 8th grade and the Los Gatos-Saratoga Joint Union High School District for 9th through 12th grade. Check by address.

School boundaries change. Confirm the assigned schools for any address with the district before you buy.

Parks, shops, and things to do

El Sereno Open Space Preserve has trails in the hills above the city.

Downtown Los Gatos and Saratoga Village are each a few minutes away for restaurants and shops.

What to check before you buy

  • Confirm the home is inside Monte Sereno city limits, since the Los Gatos mailing address covers several jurisdictions.
  • Hillside areas fall in mapped wildfire hazard zones. Get insurance quotes early.
  • Some properties use septic systems. Inspect them.
  • Check the city's site and design rules before planning an addition or rebuild.
