About Menlo Park

A guide to the city, its neighborhoods, and its homes.

Menlo Park sits between Atherton and Palo Alto, next to Stanford. It has a downtown on Santa Cruz Avenue, a Caltrain station, and a mix of older homes, mid-century houses, and new construction.

Large employers include Meta's campus by the bay and the venture capital firms along Sand Hill Road.

Getting around

US-101 and I-280 both serve the city. Sand Hill Road leads to I-280 and Stanford, and Willow Road and Bayfront Expressway lead to the Dumbarton Bridge and the East Bay.

Caltrain stops at Menlo Park station downtown.

Neighborhoods

Central Menlo Park and Allied Arts
Older homes and new construction within walking distance of downtown and Stanford.
Linfield Oaks and the Willows
Leafy streets near San Francisquito Creek and the Palo Alto border, with bungalows and ranch homes.
Sharon Heights
Hillside homes, townhomes, and condos near Sand Hill Road and I-280.
Felton Gables and Suburban Park
Mid-century single-family neighborhoods on the north side of town.
Belle Haven
Post-war single-family homes east of US-101 near the bayfront.

Homes

West of US-101, many original homes have been replaced with new two-story houses. East of US-101, lots are smaller and prices are lower.

Condos and townhomes cluster around Sharon Heights and along El Camino Real, where newer projects have added units.

Schools

Menlo Park has several elementary districts. Most of central Menlo Park is in the Menlo Park City School District. The west side is in the Las Lomitas Elementary School District, and Belle Haven is in the Ravenswood City School District. High school students attend the Sequoia Union High School District, mostly Menlo-Atherton High School.

School boundaries change. Confirm the assigned schools for any address with the district before you buy.

Parks, shops, and things to do

Bedwell Bayfront Park has trails and bay views. Downtown Menlo Park has restaurants, cafes, a library, and a weekly farmers market.

Stanford's campus, the Stanford Dish trail, and Stanford Shopping Center are close by.

What to check before you buy

  • Homes near San Francisquito Creek, including the Willows, may fall in FEMA flood zones. The creek flooded in 1998. Check by address.
  • Confirm the elementary school district by address, since it changes across town.
  • Ask for permit history on additions and rebuilds.
