About Portola Valley
A guide to the city, its neighborhoods, and its homes.
Portola Valley is a rural town in the foothills south of Woodside. Open space preserves, oak woodland, and large lots make up most of the town.
Most homes sit on one acre or more. The town has a small commercial area and a town center with a library, playing fields, and community buildings.
Getting around
I-280 runs along the east side of town. Alpine Road and Sand Hill Road connect to Menlo Park, Palo Alto, and Stanford in about 10 to 15 minutes.
The nearest Caltrain stations are in Menlo Park and Palo Alto.

Homes

The town limits density and has detailed rules on grading, tree removal, and building size.
Schools
Most of the town is in the Portola Valley School District for kindergarten through 8th grade. Ladera and some nearby areas are in the Las Lomitas Elementary School District. High school students attend the Sequoia Union High School District, which serves the area through Woodside High School.
School boundaries change. Confirm the assigned schools for any address with the district before you buy.
Parks, shops, and things to do

- Much of the town is in mapped wildfire hazard zones. Get insurance quotes early, and check defensible space requirements.
- Many homes use septic systems. Inspect the system and confirm permits.
- Ladera and some addresses with a Portola Valley mailing address sit outside the town limits. Confirm which agency handles permits and services.
