About San Carlos

A guide to the city, its neighborhoods, and its homes.

San Carlos sits between Belmont and Redwood City. It has a walkable downtown on Laurel Street, a Caltrain station, and a mix of flat neighborhoods near downtown and hillside neighborhoods to the west.

Most homes are single-family houses built from the 1920s through the 1960s, with newer condos and townhomes near downtown and El Camino Real.

Getting around

US-101 runs along the east side, and I-280 is a short drive west on Edgewood Road or Brittan Avenue.

Caltrain stops at San Carlos station on El Camino Real, a short walk from Laurel Street. San Carlos Airport, a county general aviation airport, sits just east of US-101.

Neighborhoods

White Oaks
Flat streets with 1940s and 1950s homes east of El Camino Real.
Howard Park and Burton Park
Older homes on flat and gently sloped streets close to downtown.
Devonshire
Hillside homes on winding streets with canyon views.
Clearfield Park and Beverly Terrace
Hillside neighborhoods west of Alameda de las Pulgas with mid-century homes.
San Carlos Highlands
Ridge-top homes near I-280 with larger lots and bay views.

Homes

Flat neighborhoods east of Alameda de las Pulgas have smaller lots and older bungalows and ranch homes. Hillside neighborhoods have larger lots and more split-level homes.

Many older homes have been expanded or rebuilt, so price per square foot can vary a lot on the same street.

Schools

San Carlos is in the San Carlos School District for kindergarten through 8th grade and the Sequoia Union High School District for 9th through 12th grade.

School boundaries change. Confirm the assigned schools for any address with the district before you buy.

Parks, shops, and things to do

Laurel Street has restaurants, cafes, and shops, plus a weekly farmers market. Burton Park and Central Park host community events.

Pulgas Ridge Open Space Preserve and Edgewood County Park are a few minutes west, with hiking trails and spring wildflowers.

What to check before you buy

  • Hillside homes may need drainage or foundation review. Ask for any geotechnical reports the seller has.
  • Homes near the airport may hear small-plane traffic. Visit at different times of day.
  • Some upper hillside areas fall in mapped wildfire hazard zones. Check the CAL FIRE map and insurance quotes early.
